The Control Series
A collaborative project between myself and the materials. With painting, so much of the activity is about having really refined control of materials. This series was about the opposite. By simply giving myself the parameters of what material, color and gesture I then released all control to the medium to move and blend as it wants. You can go into the process with a guess or hope of how something will turn out but the best results are when none of those ideas are met.
Acrylic on either hard board or wood panel.
I found myself coming back to this process again in 2020 in the midst of creating highly detailed, clean, geometric paintings on a large scale. Though they were extremely fulfilling the mind and the body need the balance of letting go. Almost like a stretch before a run, or dreaming at night to give the cognitive strength I need during the day.
The below pieces are all acrylic painted on 18” x 24” watercolor paper.
